To train integral professionals endowed with the conceptual and methodological tools to plan, design, execute and evaluate activities inherent in research and the sustainable use of hydro biological resources, committed to innovation and technological and socio-economic development of fisheries and aquaculture, both nationally and internationally.
In 2019, the Fishing Engineering Program will be recognized nationally and internationally for the excellence and high quality of its teachers and graduates, the generation of relevant knowledge for the development of fisheries and aquaculture, the internationalization of its curriculum and the availability of infrastructure and the technological support necessary to develop their educational project with high quality standards.
The Fishing Engineering program was created by agreement of the Superior Board No. 005 of June 5, 1969, and began academic work in 1972 with 29 students. Its first curriculum was an adoption of the Fisheries Engineering model of the National University "Federico Villarreal" of Peru. The first fishing engineer graduated in Colombia, Harley Zúñiga Clavijo, obtained his professional degree on June 30, 1978. This graduate works for the program as a plant teacher and researcher. By December 2015, 463 fishing engineers had graduated and 75 cohorts had entered.
At a national level, the impact of the Fishing Engineering program of the University of Magdalena has been favored by the fact that it is into the Quality Assurance System in Higher Education -SACES-, as the only program in Colombia accredited by High Quality in the Area of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Marine Sciences at a professional level. The Law 28 of February 10 of 1989 and the Regulatory Decree number 380 of February 26, 1993, recognized the Fishing Engineering as a profession at the university higher level and regulated its exercise in the country.
In December 2003, the peer reviewers René Cerda D'mico and Gustavo Salazar Ariza, members of the CNA, visited the institution to verify initial conditions for the qualification registration, obtaining it for seven years, according to resolution 374 February 17, 2004, of the Ministry of National Education. In December 2004, the Fishing Engineering Program awarded the High-Quality Accreditation Program for 3 years, according to resolution 1761 of May 18, 2005, of the Ministry of National Education, after the visit of the peer evaluators of the CNA, Jaime Palacio Baena, and Gustavo Salazar Ariza. Subsequently, through Resolution No. 7737 of September 6, 2010, the Ministry of National Education renewed the High-Quality accreditation of the program for six years.
It is a source of great satisfaction for the University of Magdalena and in particular for the Program, to count during this time with such an honorable distinction. Therefore, giving continuity to the process that the Fishing Engineering Program has been carrying out in order to reach high-quality standards, the academic and administrative processes have been strengthened, in search of continuous improvement and emphasizing the aspects with some degree of weakness in the past self-evaluation report, both by external peers and by the academic community itself.
The accountability of the Fishing Engineering program was on November 30, 2017. Done by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, in the attached document there is a detail of it.
Resolution 14784 of July 28, 2017 of the Ministry of Education for 4 years.
