History

In January 1999, a group from the University of Magdalena visited the University of Cartagena as a first approach to conduct a background study to analyze in which way and which of the programs required by the University of Magdalena that institution could support. The group achieved the signing of the Framework Agreement for the Development of New Programs with the University of Cartagena. Afterward, officials of the University of Cartagena visited our institution to carry out a detailed evaluation of the basic infrastructure of the University of Magdalena creating the viability of the Medicine Program offered by the University of Magdalena.

Subsequently, the university presented an agreement for the creation of the Faculty of Health Sciences and a Forum Workshop to determine the profile of the graduate of the Faculty, "Towards the Training of a Health Professional", with the attendance of representatives of ICFES, ACOFAEN, FOC, UNICARTAGENA and a large group of outstanding professionals from the Caribbean Coast.  The forum memories expressed the support and strengthening of the creation of the Faculty of Health Sciences with the Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry programs.

The training of teachers and the advice in the assembly of the Medicine Program was made by signing a Cooperation Agreement with the University of Antioquia.

On September 14, 1999, the Academic Board through Agreement No. 012 (Annex 5) authorized the creation of a professional training program in Medicine attached to the Faculty of Health Sciences and was created through Agreement 017 of October 29, 1999, by the Academic Board.

Afterward, the institution approved the project for curricular development and the organization of the curriculum of the Medicine program through Academic Agreement 028 of 2002 (Annex 7), with the emphasis on family health in its integral, sociocultural, environmental, and individual context. Due to the permanent construction and self-evaluation process of the Medicine program, a modification in the curriculum was necessary and the institution approved a transition period of the curriculum through Academic Agreement 016 of 4 August 2003.

Within the framework of the Evaluation of the Comprehensive Academic Reform carried out in the second period of 2003, the university established changes in the curricular structure for the better functioning of the Program. As a result, the Academic Board approved the project for the improvement of curricular development and organization of the curriculum of the Medicine Program through Academic Agreement 030 September 27, 2004.
